There are many phrases and words that someone will type into a search engine to find what they are looking for.  Your job with keyword research is to find the keywords that most represent what your target audience would likely type into a search engine.  This way, you know what to base your article marketing around.  Then you can use your article submission tools to market for that keyword.  If you find yourself trying to rank on the first page of search results for the word “television”, you will find that it is almost impossible.  That keyword is just too broad.  Your site will likely rank on the 100th page and will never be found by anyone.  By narrowing your keyword to specifics, like “budget flat panel television” you are much more likely to become on the first page because there is less competition.

The deciding factor in keyword research is find a keyword that is searched for regularly in google, and has low competition.  To know how much a keyword is searched for, you can use the Google Keyword Tool.  And to find how much competition the keyword has, just type your phrase with quotes in google.  The number of pages that result will tell you how many other website are competing for that keyword (the lower the better).

Ideally, you will want to find a keyword that has at least 1,000 searches and less than 10,000 pages.
